In October, the giant oil field Johan Sverdrup went on stream, two months ahead of schedule. Friday November 1st partners and suppliers, including Omega, will celebrate the opening together with Equinor.
- We are celebrating with Equinor and are pleased that the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup field is complete and in production, says department manager Thomas Sundsøy who, together with his colleagues, will celebrate with cake on all of Omega’s Norwegian offices.
Omega has contributed with the project management system Pims and expertise in project completion. The Johan Sverdrup field is one of the largest developments on the Norwegian Continental Shelf since the 1980s, and when fully operational in 2022, it will produce around 660,000 barrels of oil per day. On October 5th, the field started production, which is more than two months before the planned start-up and 40 billion NOK less than estimated in development and operation, Equinor states on their websites.
"Pims with its digital work processes gives project control over the details. With this tool potential challenges have been discovered early, and it has given an improved interaction and increased quality in the completion of the project," says Sundsøy. Omega has provided work processes with best practice to several major completion projects, including Lundin's Edvard Grieg development project and Total's Cluzean project.
"Offshore completion is a complex job that requires interaction across many disciplines and departments. Omega has provided a digital project arena for interaction based on experiences from previous projects. In practice, these are work processes for job preparation, procurement, logistics, planning and offshore installation. We have focused on efficiency with the help of project drivers and visualization of the offshore plan. This is a key part of securing control and reducing the costs of field development, real digitization," Sundsøy adds.
In addition to contributing during the offshore phase, Omega has delivered other products from Pims, including risk, cost, document control and quality that have been used throughout the project.
"Together, the delivery of professionals, work processes and Pims products contributes to a complete delivery," says Sundsøy and points out that Omega's goal has been to ensure the most efficient development of projects in the industry. "This helps reduce costs, which in turn can start more projects," says Sundsøy.
"For over 20 years, Omega has built experience following several major offshore development projects. Both the systems and expertise have contributed to the projects having good numbers and meeting the KPIs. After several success projects, we can say that we are now helping to set an industry standard for offshore completion," says Svein Tore Haraldseid, general manager of Omega's systems department.
